Legally Discussed Music and Smartly Practiced Dancing

While some of us were dabbling in jazz; others were trying to beat their way through horrible traffic to finally reach the seaside, or lazily putting another steak on the barbie, the atmosphere in Dzyga, contemporary art gallery in Lviv, was refreshing, cosy, and enlightening. Nazar Polyvka, one of Axon’s partners, talked about music – his endless inspiration. Chances were, Nazar would not stop talking for hours, that’s why he focused on one major topic – music as intellectual property. So, what was actually going on during the legal workshop for musicians?

We made clear the difference between copyright and related rights, and explored how this knowledge may be used by authors and performers. We also shed a few tears while discussing the bad fate of producers and other “uncreative” professions, as well as humane ways to distribute assets acquired “by the sweat of their brow” in cooperation with authors and performers. We managed to puzzle out the difference between publishers, labels, and collective management organizations, and bent the knee to plagiarism, the sacred instrument of cultural evolution. Sure enough, we dispelled numerous myths and studied a couple of latest cases. In other words, we practiced smart exorcism against the legal nihilism holding sway over high art.

“What’s my business in all of this?” some of you may ask. The answer is simple. It’s just that we love music and want to create humane environment on the music market, where there’s a houseroom for everybody, including authors, performers, producers, promoters, and even lawyers.
